History of the Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club

The club in its current form is the result of the amalgamation of four clubs - Burnside, West Christhurch, West Old Boys & Canterbury University. The original club, West Christchurch, was formed in 1905 when the CCA introduce district cricket. The area allocated to West was formed by the four avenue boundaries and along with Riccarton and St Albans clubs were given Hagley Oval as their home ground.

In September 1957 the club took West Old Boys and Canterbury University under its wing. In doing so, both Canterbury University and West Old Boys teams acheived senior status and in return, West acquired a feeding ground for future cricketing talent. The 1960's were a very successful period for the club and the senior team would rank as one of the strongest teams ever assembled in NZ. The new club was christened West Christchurch University club.

After many successful years of dominance of Canterbury club cricket, financial hardships associated with the rising costs of ground rental at Hagley Oval, and a delapidated club house forced the board to reconsider their options, and in 1971—after some controversy—the members decided a merger with the Suburban Burnside club was the correct decision and the new club, the Burnside West Christchurch University club, moved out to Burnside Park our current home. The new enlarged merged club required a larger pavilion and this was opened in May 1973.

The club has remained largely unchanged since this time apart from the usual ebbs and flows of fortune on and off the pitch. The club is currently going through a period of resurgence following lean years in the late 90's with more team numbers than in previous years, and with a solid core of loyal club members returning season after season the results are starting to show on and off the park.
